Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Learn Every Day Foundations Guide?

The Foundations book does just that - it is your foundation to prepare you to implement the curriculum in the best possible manner. Foundations for Learning, the cornerstone of Learn Every Day: The Preschool Curriculum, includes information from top early childhood educators on the philosophy and research behind the curriculum. Designed to help teachers arrange and manage the early childhood environment, this resource features content written by experts in the field of early childhood education. It was designed to help teachers implement developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant activities for all learners. It can also be viewed as your critical first read for a successful implementation.

Is it necessary to introduce the units to the children in the order that they are presented in Learn Every Day: The Preschool Curriculum?

Yes - but you don't have to follow in the exact order! As you progress through the curriculum, each unit becomes a little more complex, so for best results, complete them in order. However, it is okay to skip to a nearby unit of choice if it makes more sense to explore that that topic due to what is naturally occurring in your environment. For example skip to Unit 34 "Bugs & Spiders" when you notice the caterpillars and butterflies outside your window - even though they should be reviewing Unit 31 "Dinosaurs". You will need to review the developmental sequence of domain specific activities in both units to ensure you are modifying instruction to meet your student's current level of understanding. Since the units do build on each other - we do recommend completing volume one before moving to volume two. If you begin your implementation near the end of a school year - you will need to be creative in your initial implementation. Feel free to call us for more customized advice on how to conduct midyear implementations. 1-800-334-2014, ext. 3252.

What type of Professional Development or training is needed to implement this curriculum?

Learn Every Day: The Preschool Curriculum is a very intuitive program that is easy to implement without additional training. The basics of how to use the program and how to set up the environment for all types of learners are provided in the book Learn Every Day: Foundations for Learning, which is part of the curriculum. However, to improve the fidelity of the implementation, or to raise the bar on quality, programs may wish to participate in our additional professional development opportunities.

View our free introductory webinar found under the "Training" tab for a brief introduction to the curriculum. Gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy supporting this curriculum by signing up for one of our online courses, such as Foundations for Learning Every Day. We can also come to you to deliver customized, in-person implementation training! Contact our Professional Development department for a customized cost proposal at www.kaplanco.com/ProfessionalDevelopment or 1-800-334-2014, ext. 3252.

What is the purpose of the supplemental teacher resource library?

The Learn Every Day Teacher Resource Book Set (Item # 24536) consists of eight resources that further enable teachers, directors, and curriculum coordinators to build their own professional development and learn more about important topics. While the Learn Every Day: Foundations for Learning (included with the curriculum) guide provides lots of information on topics such as the brain research about how children learn and develop, many teachers want more in-depth information about those topics - this supplemental teacher library provides that added level of information!

Will this curriculum work in a half day program?

YES! Because there is so much flexibility within the curriculum, it is ideal for a half-day program. On Learn Every Day: The Preschool Curriculum's interactive website under the "Resources for Teachers" tab, visit "Sample Schedules" to find suggestions on how to adapt the curriculum for both full-day and half-day programs.

I have a mixed-age class of both four- and five-year-olds. How do I use Learn Every Day effectively?

In programs with mixed-age classrooms, where some children might remain in the same classroom for two years, Learn Every Day: The Preschool Curriculum can easily be adapted for your setting. It is important to note that children build on prior knowledge - children exposed to specific topics at age 3 will have a totally different reaction at age 4! During the second exposure to topics, children are more likely to expand on their knowledge and take their learning experience to a higher, more in-depth level.

While the units were designed to last approximately one week each, you can easily extend them so that they last more than one week. By adding projects and using the alternative activities provided in each unit, the curriculum can be presented across a longer time span. This is when you may wish to add the supplemental "Learn Every Day" series book set to your implementation.

What is the purpose of the eight supplementary Learn Every Day About books?

The eight books featured in the Learn Every Day book series correspond to eight of the units featured in the Learn Every Day: The Preschool Curriculum. The activities within these books are not included in the curriculum and provide additional activities for programs that want to extend the units or that want more activities on a specific topic.

Does this curriculum come with a required manipulative kit?

By necessity, preschool teachers must plan ahead, so a detailed materials list is provided with each lesson. Every effort has been made to use low-cost items or ones common to preschool classrooms. You may find that you do not have all the items listed. It's okay to substitute! Remember, the purpose of each unit is to introduce new and exciting ways for children to explore. Learning is a process, not a product.

To make life even easier for programs implementing this curriculum, we offer three pre-assembled kits with author-selected items designed to enhance the implementation! Click the links to view more: the Science Skills Kit; the Math Skills Kit; and the Language, Literacy, and Listening Skills Kit.

A lot of children's books are mentioned in the read aloud and literacy sections of this curriculum. Do I need to purchase this library of children's books?

No worries! We recognize - while a must-have - children's books can be an expensive consumable to purchase each year. You are encouraged to find the suggested titles in the most economical fashion, such as through your public library, book club, or shared lending libraries. Many of the titles are available for purchase through Kaplan Early Learning Company in both hardback and paper back format. In some cases, you may wish to substitute an alternate book. Substitutions are fine, as long as you use a book that is related to the topic being introduced in a specific unit. The idea is to introduce concepts and new ideas to children, and as long as you remember to select developmentally appropriate books, it is okay to make an occasional substitution.

What is the LED-Profile Planner and how much does it cost?

Profile Planner for Learn Every Day™ The Preschool Curriculum comes pre-loaded with the units from Learn Every Day™: The Preschool Curriculum and a digital content library of online resources including activities, apps, books, music, and videos. The Profile Planner is an easy way to organize, schedule, and share daily classroom activities. To get more information, visit www.kaplanco.com/profileplanner.

Is this program aligned to standards?

Yes! Learn Every Day is aligned to State Standards and Head Start Outcomes. You can find these alignments on our website under the "Alignments" tab above. LED-Profile Planner users will also be able to access the alignment via their subscription to LED-Profile Planner.
