DECA Program for Preschoolers Training

DECA Program Implementation Training

The Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) Program is a strength-based system designed to promote resilience in children 2 through 5 years old. Through the program, early childhood professionals and families learn specific strategies to promote young children's social and emotional development and to enhance the overall quality of early childhood programs. In this hands-on, two-day training, participants will learn to implement the five steps of the comprehensive DECA Program. These five steps are: 1) Collecting information on individual children and program practices; 2) Administering the DECA, a nationally standardized, norm-referenced, strength-based assessment of social and emotional development; 3) Summarize assessment results; 4) Develop and implement plans for the classroom and individual children, and 5) Evaluate Progress.

DECA-C Training

The DECA-C is a standardized, norm-referenced behavior rating scale that evaluates behaviors related to social and emotional resilience and concerns in preschool children ages 2 through 5. The DECA-C is designed to support early intervention efforts to reduce or eliminate significant emotional and behavioral concerns in preschool children. Topics covered in the one-day DECA-C Training will include: the development and standardization of the DECA-C; administering the DECA-C; scoring the tool; interpreting results; using the mental health consultation model to establish a plan of how to work with families around results; and, planning next steps for children. **Participants need to be a "Level B" user to order and use this tool. For more information on the qualifications of a Level B user, please e-mail Debi Mahler at dmahler@devereux.org

Local Program Mentor Training

The two-day Local Program Mentor Training will help prepare DECA Program Implementation Training participants to return to their local programs and offer technical assistance and workshops as necessary on the DECA Program. Time will be spent on reviewing DECA Program key messages, discussing training and mentoring tips and techniques, and troubleshooting with program staff and participants currently using the DECA Program or who are planning to use the DECA Program. **Prerequisite: participants need to have attended the 2-Day DECA Program Implementation Training conducted by a DECA Program Certified Trainer.
