Kaplan Classroom Science Kit Sample Activities:

  • Bugs - Flies, bees, ladybugs, butterflies, and ants are just a few of the insects children may spot on a nature walk. Try capturing bugs with a bug jar and use the jumbo magnifiers to help children see them up close.
  • Magnets - Introduce basic scientific concept with this fun activity. Cut pipe cleaners into 1/2" long pieces and place the pieces into a sensory tube. Encourage children to run a mighty magnet along the side of the sensory tube and watch as the colorful pieces follow the magnet.
  • Colors - Introduce the color-changing chameleon to your students by reading A Color of His Own. Children can experiment with color changing of their own by mixing the different lenses on the color mixing glasses.
  • Chemical Reactions - Baking soda experiments are a great, safe way to introduce chemical reactions to children. Add a spoon full of baking soda to the jumbo test tubes. In the color mixer, fill both sides with vinegar. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to one side and red food coloring to the other. Pour the contents of the color mixer into the test tubes and watch as baking soda and vinegar react to produce a purple fizz.
  • Observations - Salt and sugar may look similar to the naked eye, but up close, you can see the differences. Place a small amount of salt on the clear plastic specimen case. Slide the case onto the viewscope and observe the shape of the salt. Repeat the process with a sample of sugar and discuss the differences with your class.
