3 years & up. Develops shape-recognition and spatial relations. Features 10 simply designed, colorful patterns, and 45 pattern blocks in 6 different shapes and colors for replicating each pattern. Stores neatly in wooden case.
This is a great classic wooden toy. It's recommended for ages 3+, but I think it's age appropriate for kids as young as 2. It's durable, so it will hold up to lots of use. Your kids will want to play with it everyday. My kids, ages 5 and 3 like to make patterns for each other to copy. I recommend this set over the lacing beads set because it has the added element of sequencing. You can buy shoelaces to use with the beads. I love that it comes in a wooden case for storage and easy clean up. This would make a great gift.
Fun but a little confusing
My students like this product because they like to try to make the pattern that is on the flat rectangular plates. My only complaint is that the beads do not quite match the pictures on the plates. The two shapes that are the most confusing is the hexagon shape and the cylinder shape on the plates. In order for me to find which bead matched the hexagon shape, I had to look at the picture that came on the box of children using this product. The tall cylinder shape looks like it would be a cube. You have to pay close attention to the edges. The cubes have pointy edges and the cylinder has slightly curvy edges. The colors are also tough to match. The purple pictures on the plates look a little blue and the blue pictures on the plates look grey.
Price does not match Quality
My preschoolers love to use this to stack the blocks. Some find it very difficult to place the pattern cards in the slot where they are suppose to go. Some children have pushed so hard that it splintered the wood. Fortunately I have wood glue and a very strong clip to fix most broken toys. It is only worth have of the cost.
