The GREENGUARD Educational Institute awarded Kaplan Early Learning Company GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification® and GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification  for all products in three educational furniture product lines last week.

Both GREENGUARD Certifications signify that all products in Kaplan’s Premium Ash, Carolina Line Premium Birch and K-System furniture lines are in compliance with the stringent chemical emissions guidelines set by the GREENGUARD Educational Institute.

GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification℠, which takes into account the unique sensitivities of children, requires products to meet strict chemical emissions limits in the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, phthalates and several other harmful, fine particles. These restrictions help ensure healthier indoor air quality in environments where children and others work, play or reside.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recently named indoor air pollution as one of the greatest risks to human health. According to the USEPA, indoor air can be as much as 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. High chemical emissions levels in indoor air have been linked to many health problems, including asthma, autism and cancer. Poor indoor air quality is a growing concern for U.S. schools, as the USEPA estimates that more than half of U.S. schools have indoor air quality problems.

Selecting low-emitting, non-toxic products when furnishing, renovating or constructing a school building is one strategy for addressing and preventing indoor air quality concerns.

Kaplan Early Learning Company was commended for obtaining GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification℠ for their educational furniture line products. These standards are the strictest worldwide and ensure that Kaplan furniture has the lowest possible level of potentially harmful emissions available for sale.

“These certifications reflect our commitment to introduce to the marketplace products that offer exceptional performance, as well as strong environmental advantages,” said Matthew Marceron, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Kaplan Early Learning Company.  “It is important to us to contribute to creating healthy indoor environments where children learn and play.”

The GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification℠ Program focuses on products intended for use in schools, daycares or other environments where children spend significant periods of time. This program is referenced by both the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS)  and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Building Rating System .

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute aims to protect human health and improve quality of life by enhancing indoor air quality and reducing people’s exposure to chemicals and other pollutants.  The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute certifies products and materials for low chemical emissions and provides a resource for choosing healthier products and materials for indoor environments.  All certified products must meet stringent chemical emissions standards based on established criteria from key public health agencies. GREENGUARD Certification is broadly recognized and accepted by sustainable building programs and building codes worldwide.
