National Center for Family Literacy

National Center For Family LiteracyThe National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) was established in 1989 with a grant from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust. Founded by current president Sharon Darling, NCFL began with a simple but ambitious mission: To help parents and children achieve their greatest potential together through quality literacy programs.

Today, NCFL is recognized worldwide as the leader in family literacy development. NCFL works with educators and community builders through an array of services to design and sustain programs that meet the most urgent educational needs of disadvantaged families.

NCFL is also recognized as one of the premiere organizations for the delivery of family literacy training. Emphasizing the most recent language and literacy research, their training distills proven methods into practical solutions. Building on more than ten years of field experience, NCFL trainings provide strategies for improving language and literacy skills of children and their parents. Training services address the challenges of working with low literacy families.

Over the years, NCFL has provided consistent, dynamic training and technical assistance to Even Start, Head Start, Title 1 and Adult Education programs, publicly and privately funded programs, state and regional literacy professionals, community leaders and other family advocates.

Kaplan Early Learning Company has partnered with the National Center for Family Literacy in the creation of two kits that promote language development, print awareness, letter recognition and phonological awareness. There is a kit available for Infant/Toddler Teachers and a kit for Preschool Teachers, each including a teachers guide, parent activity cards, materials and activities. These kits are used also in conjunction with their training programs.
