Curriculum
Selection Criteria
Choosing the appropriate curriculum is important to programs for facilitating the development of children. When evaluating various curricula, ask yourself this question: What are the knowledge, experience, and abilities of the program staff? The answer will determine the curriculum or combination of curricula that you choose. For the staff that is knowledgeable about developmentally appropriate practice, but has limited experience you will want to choose a curriculum that has specific activity ideas. Examples include:

- Active Learning for Toddlers
- Active Learning for Ones
- Active Learning for Twos
- Active Learning for Threes
- Active Learning for Fours
- Active Learning for Fives
For the staff that has many activity ideas, but not as much knowledge about developmentally practice, you will want to choose a curriculum that includes information about developmentally practice and guidelines for routines, teacher self-assessment, and activity guidelines. Examples include:

- The Creative Curriculum for Preschool
Once you have examined several curricula, ask yourself a few more questions such as:
- Does the curriculum meet the developmental needs of children? Does it allow the children to explore their environment and promote hands-on learning? Does it have realistic expectations of the children that are attainable? Does it allow flexibility for teachers and children? Does it promote the social integration among children and adults? Does it promote feelings of safety, security, and belonging?
- Does the curriculum offer guidelines for including families? Does it promote positive relationships with families? Is it sensitive to and respectful of cultural and linguistic diversity?
- Does the curriculum offer an appropriate method of assessing children? Does it build and elaborate on children's current knowledge and abilities?
- Does the curriculum offer guidelines for including children with disabilities? Does it challenge children with disabilities to attain goals beyond those specified in the IEP/IFSP?
Selecting the appropriate curriculum will enable programs to meet the needs of the staff and the children and families whom they serve. This sometimes means choosing a combination of materials.
